My thoughts on why Obama won the Peace Prize

First of all, let me preface this with the fact that I am a raging liberal and supported Obama throughout the entire campaign. So I may be a little biased.

A friend of mine posted one of those stupid polls to Facebook, this one asking if Obama deserved the Peace Prize. His vote was ‘No’. So I posted this response as to why I feel he deserved the award, and asked for his reasons as to why he felt he didn’t deserve it. Since I felt the post was kinda insightful (and took me forever to write up), I felt I would re-publish that comment here. Partly because I liked my arguements, but mostly because I want my thoughts to not be caged away on someone’s wall on Facebook, bu instead available to the wider world webs. So, here it goes (in it’s entirety, completely unedited).

So I’m curious as to what your reasons are for why he doesn’t deserve the award? Here are my reasons why he did deserve it:

A) Alfred Nobel’s will, which established the award, states the Peace Prize should be given to the person “who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity among nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”

This is the protocol the Committee uses when determining a winner. Sure he was nominated early in his administration, but voting didn’t end 9 days into it. In fact, it only recently ended.

Furthermore, *anyone* can be nominated by a person who is eligible to nominate someone. In fact, Adolf Hitler was once nominated, only to have the nomination rescinded 3 days later by the person who nominated him. This simply shows that any person could be nominated for the Peace Prize. Once nominated, the committee then looks at everyone, shortens the list, and sends it out for people to vote on. So, using the tactic of time isn’t a viable option.

B) Look at all he’s done to end nuclear proliferation (meets the “abolition or reduction of standing armies” bit of the criteria. Next, look at all he’s doing to try to resolve things with countries the Bush administration would’ve much rather just dropped off the face of the Earth. That was no way to act as a world power, and it seriously pushed us back several years in terms of being a responsible world citizen. The simple act of reaching out to these nations with the promise of peaceful, meaningful talks is a huge leap forward for us. And the simple fact he’s willing to not hold the threat of an invasion over their heads is utterly fantastic. If threats don’t work, try being reasonable with them instead. This would satisfy the “holding and promotion of peace congresses” bit of the will.

C) Read the reason the Nobel committee gave him the prize. They did it to stimulate him to keep at his course. They want to see what he’s been talking about come to fruition and hope that giving him the Peace Prize will be enough motivation to keep it up.

So, as you can see, he has met both criteria set by Alfred Nobel in his will for giving out the Peace Prize. Furthermore, the Nobel committee is encouraged by his work so far and wants to see things progress even more.

So, tell me Jeff, why doesn’t he deserve this award?

I can haz Windows 7?

Why yes, yes I can haz.

You may have heard on the internet or your local news that Microsoft is sponsoring “house parties” for the Windows 7 launch later this month? What? You haven’t? Well, check this out first before proceeding. And yes, this is a real video made for House Party hosts.

So now you have an idea about what the house party is all about, right? Good.

IMG_1124Well, I was lucky enough to be selected to host a Windows 7 house party. That’s right, I get to have activities related to Windows 7 with all my friends, or something like that. In reality, I’m co-hosting the party with 2 fellow SL,UT’s on Twitter, @Saintless and @michaelkreagan. We’re gonna pool our party packs together and throw a hell of a bash. That’s 12 packages of streamers, 30 napkins, 30 tote bags, 30 balloons, and a innumerable amount of ads to stuff down our guests throats.

The best part of this is Microsoft is giving every host a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate for doing this, which is actually pretty cool of them. Even better? The party pack arrived today, over 2 weeks before the launch happens. And not only is it Windows 7 ltimate, it’s the Steve Ballmer signature edition. Which basically means the package that has the disc says ‘signature edition’ on the outside and has Steve-o’s John Hancock on it.

It may be hokey, but it’s really a great way to get people talking about Windows 7 and was really quite an ingenious move on Microsoft’s party. Apple should do things like this around keynotes. They should allow a few thousand people to have a livestream of the keynote, and give them party packs to throw a ‘Stevenote’ house party. But then again, Apple doesn’t need any help in the ‘word of mouth’ department.

Happy 10 year birthday, Dreamcast!

dreamcast-3It was 10 years ago today that Sega launched the Dreamcast here in the U.S. It beat the PS2 and XBOX to market in the 6th generation console wars, but ended up being the loser in the race (Sega discontinued the Dreamcast in March 2001). I was also a little sketchy of it at first, but warmed up and ended up getting one in December 1999. I have such fond memories of playing games like Soul Caliber, DoA2, Crazy Taxi, and Ready 2 Rumble for hours on end. And who could forget those awesome accessories, like the fishing pole? This was loong before the Wii.

Unfortunately for Sega, the Playstation2 and XBOX were released a year later, everyone seemed to abandon you. And lets not forget the backwards compatibility of the PS2 and the marketing money behind the XBOX. Our poor little Dreamcast never had a chance past October 2000.

So, Dreamcast, I bid you a happy birthday. I’m sad I no longer own my Dreamcast, as I could go for some Jet Set Radio right about now.

Don't bother 'Digging' me.

If you were thinking of using Digg’s new URL shortening service to shorten that URL, think again. There has been a backlash on the web over Digg’s new URL shortening service because of the ‘DiggBar’. When someone clicks that URL you shortened, they’re presented with the DiggBar on the top of the page, with the content you wanted below it. The problem with this is Digg is using an <iframe> to display this, so the URL presented in the address bar is that of digg.com, not yours. In addition to this, if you click to another site, the address stays at digg.com.This is generally considered bad form on the internet and typically pisses people off.

For the simple fact of them framing the content, I have blocked people from trying to visit my site through a Digg shortened URL, when you do, you’ll be presented with this nice message:

Dear Digg,

Framing other people’s sites is uncool. Please, don’t use the DiggBar to shorten my URL’s.

Fuck off,

Me.

This has been installed for all my domains, so don’t bother.

There are other reasons why people are against the DiggBar, but this is my only reason. If you’re interested in what these reasons are, John Gruber over at Daring Fireball has been doing a good job documenting the backlash on the blogosphere. It was from John where I got the code to block Digg (as well as BurnURL and Adjix, FWIW).

Why I'll secondguess another MacHeist

First, a primer. MacHeist is a program that gives you a bundle of software for a cheap price. The premise of the MacHeist is they start off giving you a couple software packages, and as more and more people buy it, more software becomes “unlocked” when certain benchmarks are met.

I’ve never participated in a MacHeist before this year. This was due to past MacHeist’s either offering software I didn’t want, or already had. This year, they’re offering World f Goo, Cro Mag Rally, WireTap Studio, and a few other packages that interest me. Just the retail price of Goo and Cro Mag make the $39 for the package a steal.

So I (figuratively) threw down my credit card and porked up the $39. After I hit the “complete purchase” button, I was presented with a blank, white web page. If I tried to refresh, I got the error that it would resend my request. Not wanting to have my card authorized for 2 $39 charges, I declined this offer. I waited around on the blank page, like the sucker I am, for more than a few minutes, hoping something would display. Inside another tab, I was refreshing my Gmail to see if a confirmation email would show up. It didn’t. I checked my credit card account and, sure enough, there was the charge for $39. So I fired off an email to the support team at MacHeist, hoping they would get back to me and fix it all.

That was April 1.

After 48+ hours with no response, I sent another email to their sales team. These emails describe what happened during the order process, provide them with the charge details from my bank, and ask that things be resolved at their eariiest convenience. This last email was sent about 12 hours ago and I still have no response. So I’m sitting here with $39 charged to my card, but nothing to show for it.

This is a bad customer service fail for MacHeist. I *really* wanted to like the package. But this just leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth. I’m afraid to do the order again, fearing the same would happen again. So instead, I’ll just wait a few more days for a response from MacHeist, if nother happens by then, it’s off to my credit card’s dispute department to get this rectified. t really shouldn’tis difficult to get a response from someone at the other end. It makes the entire entity come across as sophmoric.

MacHeist, next time around, rather than be concerned with putting Chris Pirillo, Veronica Belmont, and Lisa Bettany on Ustream to launch it, make sure you have a way to respond to problems in a timely manner. Any kind of communication at this point would be nice. Truthfully, I have no idea that my emails have actually been received by anyone. They have no autoresponse set up to notify people their email came across the tubes OK and give the customer an expectation as to when to expect a response, etc. These small little things make a huge difference when dealing with a customer. Just a head’s up.

P.S. If anyone from MacHeist ever sees this, my emails came from HOMERJ79 at GMAIL dot COM. KTHXBAI.

Update – 04/05/09 1:40AM

This morning I got my email from MacHeist confirming my order and letting me download everything. It still took longer than it should have (with no communication from MacHeist at all), but it’s at least rectified. I still stand behind my claim that they need to be more proactive towards these problems.
